Artificial Reefs

Artificial Reef Design, Manufacture & Deployment

Metsel Marine and Civil provides specialist artificial reef design, manufacture and deployment services for fisheries enhancement, habitat creation, marine restoration and coastal infrastructure projects.

MMC combines marine engineering, precast concrete manufacture, offshore handling and deployment capability with direct leadership experience in the development and delivery of purpose-designed artificial reef systems in Australia.

Our artificial reef solutions can be developed for recreational fishing, ecological enhancement, seagrass restoration, biodiversity improvement, scour mitigation and habitat creation.

Artificial Reef Design, Manufacture & Deployment

Artificial Reef Capabilities

MMC can provide complete artificial reef packages including:
  • Concept and detailed reef design
  • Structural engineering and stability assessment
  • Habitat geometry and void development
  • Marine ecology input
  • Hydrodynamic and seabed assessment
  • Precast concrete reef modules
  • High-relief reef structures
  • Low-relief benthic habitat systems
  • Articulated concrete habitat mattresses
  • Custom steel mould design and manufacture
  • Concrete production and casting
  • Lifting and deployment engineering
  • Reef layout and placement planning
  • Marine transport and offshore deployment
  • Post-installation inspection and survey

Purpose-Designed Reef Modules

MMC develops reef modules around the environmental and biological objectives of each project rather than using a single standard structure. Modules can incorporate:
  • Multiple opening and cavity sizes
  • Large internal cryptic chambers
  • Shaded habitat
  • Vertical relief
  • Flow-through openings
  • Internal shelves and ledges
  • Roughened marine concrete surfaces
  • Habitat for juvenile and adult fish
  • Mollusc and crustacean habitat
  • Features promoting marine growth and colonisation
Reef geometry can be tailored to target species, seabed conditions, water depth, metocean conditions and required reef footprint.

High-Relief Artificial Reefs

MMC high-relief reef modules are intended to provide substantial vertical structure within otherwise low-relief seabed environments. Typical concepts may incorporate hollow concrete structures with large internal chambers, multiple habitat openings and broad stable bases. High-relief reefs can be arranged in clusters to provide:
  • Fish aggregation and production habitat
  • Vertical complexity
  • Current interaction and localised upwelling
  • Large and small refuge spaces
  • Recreational fishing opportunities
  • Diving and marine tourism opportunities

Low-Relief Habitat Reefs

MMC can also develop low-profile reef systems designed to create extensive benthic habitat while maintaining relatively low vertical relief. These may include articulated concrete habitat systems, interconnected precast units and distributed reef modules. Low-relief systems are particularly suited to:
  • Benthic habitat creation
  • Juvenile fish habitat
  • Crustacean and mollusc habitat
  • Seagrass-associated ecosystems
  • Scour mitigation
  • Habitat enhancement around marine infrastructure

Artificial Reefs for Seagrass and Ecological Restoration

Artificial reef structures can be designed specifically to complement seagrass restoration and broader marine habitat objectives. MMC works with marine ecologists and environmental specialists to develop reef configurations that consider:
  • Light availability
  • Sediment movement
  • Seabed stability
  • Local hydrodynamics
  • Existing benthic habitat
  • Seagrass establishment
  • Habitat connectivity
  • Ecological succession
  • Long-term environmental performance
This allows structural and ecological requirements to be considered together during reef development.

Marine Concrete Reef Manufacture

MMC has specialist capability in marine concrete, precast systems and reusable mould development. With our mobile batch plant we can manufacture custom concrete mixes on demand. Artificial reef units can be manufactured using durable marine-grade concrete designed for long-term submerged exposure. Manufacturing systems can include:
  • Reusable steel moulds
  • Modular mould systems
  • Internal removable formers
  • Habitat-opening inserts
  • Cast-in lifting systems
  • High-strength marine concrete
  • Controlled batching and QA
  • Project-specific precast production facilities
MMC can establish temporary production facilities close to the deployment location where transport of large precast units would otherwise be inefficient.

Reef Deployment

Artificial reef design must consider installation from the outset. MMC develops reef modules around practical marine handling requirements including:
  • Unit weight
  • Crane capacity
  • Vessel deck loading
  • Lifting arrangements
  • Transport configuration
  • Deployment frames
  • Installation tolerances
  • Seabed orientation
  • Placement accuracy
Marine deployment can be undertaken with specialist marine contractors using barges, construction vessels, cranes, ROVs and commercial diving teams.

Relevant Artificial Reef Experience

MMC’s leadership team brings direct previous experience in the development of purpose-designed artificial reef systems in Australia. MMC Director James Hallam has over 15 years experience in artificial reefs and was previously a Director of Subcon Technologies involved in artificial reef projects incorporating concrete reef modules, high-relief reef structures, articulated concrete habitat systems, specialised mould development and offshore deployment. This experience provides MMC with an understanding of the complete artificial reef lifecycle: Concept → Engineering → Mould Design → Manufacture → Marine Handling → Deployment

Applications

MMC artificial reef systems can be developed for:
  • Recreational fishing reefs
  • Fisheries enhancement
  • Ecological restoration
  • Seagrass restoration
  • Marine biodiversity enhancement
  • Port and harbour habitat
  • Offshore infrastructure habitat offsets
  • Coastal rehabilitation
  • Scour protection combined with habitat creation
  • Marine tourism and dive attractions
  • Research and monitoring reefs

Why MMC

MMC approaches artificial reefs as both marine habitat and engineered offshore structures. Our designs consider biological function, structural performance, constructability, installation methodology and whole-of-life cost from the beginning of the project.
