A recent specialist grouting project completed by Metsel Marine and Civil at the Newmont Boddington Gold Mine involved stabilising a tunnel affected by subsidence.
MMC designed and installed 25 custom-manufactured grout bags between the existing steel support frame and the tunnel roof. The bags were configured to fill the irregular voids, provide uniform contact and transfer support between the tunnel structure and surrounding ground.
Metsel developed a project-specific expanding grout with:
• High-flow properties for pumping over 120 metres
• Controlled expansion to improve contact and compensate for shrinkage
• Pumpability suited to restricted underground access
• Performance tailored to the custom grout bag system
The grout was mixed and pumped into each bag under controlled conditions to achieve effective filling around the steel support structure and stabilise the affected section of tunnel.
This project demonstrates MMC’s ability to provide a complete engineered solution, including grout design, custom fabric formwork, specialist mixing and pumping equipment, installation and site execution.
