The MinRes Onslow Iron Ore project is located near the town Of Onslow in Western Australia. The Onslow Iron project is one of the largest iron ore projects currently under development in Australia.

The project will have the shortest pit-to-port distance in the industry, with iron ore transported 150 kilometres from the inland mine site to the port. In a world-first, ion ore will be transported by autonomous road trains along its own haulage road, Once the product reaches port, it will be shipped via fully enclosed transhippers to larger vessels anchored 40 kilometres off the coast.

Metsel were contracted to design build and install 300 tonne of grout for the Transhipper Berth. located at the Port of Ashburton. Twenty-two mooring dolphins required approximately 13 tonnes Of grout per annulus. The loading of walkways onto the Structure within 24 hours of the grout installation posed a unique challenge. In order to land these structures. the grout had to reach 50Mpa within 24hrs and 140Mpa after 28 Days. A High Early Strength grout was sourced to meet the 50Mpa requirement- The second and most challenging part was the equipment build, The grout. with its larger aggregate and unique admixtures required a 6-minute mixing time, The team at Metsel Marine & Civil had to come up with a design that could continuously mix, pump and deliver this grout within the required time frame per annulus.

Through consultation With the client. the resulting build was a two-story grout plant consisting of:

  • 2t loading hopper with Bag breaker
  • 1m3 planetary pan mixer
  • Wet holding hopper feeding into a
  • 20m3/ Line Pump

The project was delivered safely, productively and five days ahead of schedule, allowing the installation of walkways to be brought forward,
